AnnotationIn this Norwegian study, two groups of over-80s - living in nursing homes, or alone in their own homes in the community - were compared as to their experiences of loneliness and the influence of social relationships. There were no significant differences in experienced loneliness between the two groups, where there was close contact with family and friends. Loneliness was experienced by institutional residents who did not have such contacts. Frequency of contacts with family and neighbours did not significantly influence the degree of loneliness for residents in institutions, whereas for those living in the community there were significant differences.
