Annotation | Previous explanations of limited participation by males as family caregivers assume that socialisation to dominant gender stereotypes is a universal barrier among men. This study draws on interview data from a sample of 32 men who were chief caregivers for elderly relatives, and presents case study material to illustrate several pathways by which male respondents gained access to family caregiving roles. The introduction of Risman's view that current experience influences socialised predispositions, allows delineation of conditions under which male relatives who have internalised stereotypical self images of masculinity can also assume caregiver roles in the family. |
