AnnotationThere is considerable evidence that poor communication between doctors and patients is often the cause of patients' dissatisfaction and of a growing number of complaints. Special attention and skills are needed for communicating with, for example, very old patients, or with those from different cultural or ethnic backgrounds. This report examines reasons for failure of communication between doctors and their patients, and makes recommendations on how difficulties might be overcome. It emphasises the need for training in communication skills through all stages of medical education, and highlights the importance of good communication between doctors and other healthcare workers, also the role of managers in facilitating communication. How to break bad news is also covered.
