Annotation | This study, which focused on wards in the Elderly Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital, sought to obtain the views of informal carers on the care of dying patients. It also aimed to identify areas of good practice and problems with the process of care in an acute medical setting, and to provide feedback to staff, so that changes in practice could be considered. This paper highlights the critical components necessary to develop a palliative care approach in an environment primarily concerned with acute treatment, including symptom management, contact and communication between staff, patients and carers, and follow-up support for bereaved carers. |
