Annotation | This study examined the degree to which caregivers' psychological distress was affected by the presence of people with similar experiences in their social networks. Results supported the view that those undergoing chronic stress - in this case, family caregivers to relatives with AD (Alzheimer's disease) benefited from networks with a larger number of associates who have experienced the same transition. They had lower levels of depression, particularly those in more stressful caregiving situations. The authors discuss possible explanations for this effect, and suggest implications of the findings for future research and practice. |
