AnnotationIn this study of people aged 75 and over in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, in 1981 (n=1,203) and 1987 (n=1,579), differences between physical functioning (measured by independence in ADL - activities of daily living) were compared with corresponding inter-cohort differences in perceived health. Between 1981 and 1988, the proportion of older people who were dependent in ADLs decreased, while the proportion with less than good self-perceived health was higher, particularly comparing men aged 75-81. Self-perceived health remained as strong a predictor of mortality in 1988 as in 1981. This may indicate a higher prevalence of mild chronic conditions in newer cohorts of over 75s, with implications for primary health providers.
