Annotation | This article refers to the steep increase in hospitalisation of those aged 65 and over since the mid 1950s. While medical and geriatric departments figure prominently among those who deal with a large number of elderly patients, some 35% of beds in surgical wards were occupied by patients over 65 - a proportion which was rising. |
