AnnotationIncidence data from the Scottish Cancer Registry from 1981 to 1990 were used to examine the size of the cancer burden in those aged 75 years and over, with future burden estimated by applying current age specific rates to population projections. Cancer survival in older cancer patients was examined and comparisons made with other selected countries. The place of treatment of people under and over 75 in Scotland was investigated. Approximately 30% of the total cancer burden in Scotland and other countries occurs in older people, and the total number of incident cases in Scotland in the over 75s is estimated to rise by 60% in males and 20% in females by 2029. Survival declines with increasing age. Older people with cancer in Scotland are less likely to to treated away from their home area, and are more likely to be admitted to institutions which admit small numbers of patients.
