Annotation | This document presents a description and analysis of the barriers to independent living encountered by older people based on a literature review, a consultation with older people, their associations, people working with them, and a focus group session with experts on ageing. Seven major problem areas are described, with suggestions for action: physical health; emotional or mental well-being; transportation and mobility; community-based support services; safety and security; housing; and communication and information. There would be great potential for older people - even those who are frail or disabled - to continue living in the community, if these problem areas are dealt with effectively. |
