Annotation | This paper reviews the problem of drug-related illness in older people, its consequences in terms of avoidable mortality, and the contribution of suboptimal prescribing to its occurrence. Prescribing could be improved if physicians used computerised expert decision-making support systems, and had access to prescription claims files - with the proviso that confidentiality is protected. Practitioners should also become more knowledgeable on the risks and benefits of drugs for older people. |
