Annotation | Hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for stroke, a condition that is a major threat in the health of older people. This study was undertaken to obtain updated evidence on which to base treatment decisions and formulate valid clinical guidelines. A meta-analysis of all published and unpublished randomised controlled trials of drug treatment in older hypertensives was performed. The study concludes that the evidence for effectiveness of treating hypertension in appropriate older people is strong, consistent and convincing.
