Annotation | This article covers some of the problem areas highlighted in the Association's report, 'Hungry in hospital?', which was published in January 1997. Some patients - particularly older patients - are 'starving' when they are in hospital. Information was collected on aspects, including: problems with ordering and choice of meals; communication between nursing and catering staff of patients' needs; timing of meals; assumptions made about food left uneaten; positioning of food; cutlery and other physical problems relating to self-feeding; medication; the eating environment; and who takes responsibility for ensuring that patients are eating and drinking. |
