AnnotationDespite the importance of walking - for health, to reduce pollution, and for a more pedestrian-friendly environment - it is ignored by policy makers. Local councils should develop strategies to increase walking similar to those adopted in York and Edinburgh. Central government policies discriminate against walking, and these need to be changed if local initiatives are to succeed.
