AnnotationThe overall provision of neurological services by many district general hospitals (DGHs) is inadequate. Commonly, the sole specialist support is provided by a consultant neurologist visiting one or more DGHs at weekly or longer intervals, which is unsatisfactory for patient care. General medical and geriatric medical teams are likely to continue to have responsibility for immediate management of patients with acute neurological disorders; at the same time, it is difficult for them to keep up to date on developments in diagnosis and management. The report's Working Party makes recommendations on future patterns of care: appointment of neurological consultants with appropriate junior support; provision of postgraduate and continuing education to non-neurological staff, including general practitioners; and expansion of resources for rehabilitation.
