Annotation | Despite the decline of rheumatic fever, valvular heart disease remains a common and important problem, particularly in an ageing population. These guidelines include sections on the role of the general practitioner in initial assessment and referral, the role of the physician/cardiologist in the hospital assessment, and interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery. They provide minimum standards which can be used to audit patient care, and highlight areas for improvement in practice. |
