AnnotationIn 1988, the Department of Health (DoH) required each health authority in England to introduce a cervical screening programme for all women aged 20 to 64 to have a smear test at least every five years. Two key outcomes to measure the effectiveness of the screening programme are reductions in incidence and mortality rates from cervical cancer, which also form part of the Health of the Nation targets. However, this can only be achieved if all women within the target population have access to a high quality screening service which is subject to continual monitoring, evaluation and improvement of standards. This book outlines an overall quality framework within which standards can be met, maintained and monitored.
