AnnotationThis study examines differences by age group in: the frequency of prayer; racial and gender variation in prayer; and religious sociodemographic correlates of prayer. Analyses were conducted across four age groups - 18-30, 31-40, 41-60, and 61 and over - using data from the 1988 US National Opinion Research Center (NORC) General Social Survey (n=1481). Findings reveal that prayer is frequently practised at all ages, but more frequently in older age groups. Females, and to a lesser extent, African Americans pray more frequently than males and whites, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses reveal statistically significant associations across age groups between prayer and key measures of religious behaviour, feeling, belief and experience.
