Annotation | In 1985, this book's editor established the Team for the Assessment of Psychiatric Services (TAPS), to evaluate the policy of discharging long-stay patients into the community. Researchers associated with TAPS report on the results of this comprehensive evaluation of the replacement of psychiatric hospitals with district-based services. The evolution of UK mental health policy, and the United States' move to de-institutionalisation point to reasons for the rise and fall of the psychiatric hospital. Key aspects of community care are examined: the treatment of different kinds of long-term patient; patient management and outcomes; and staff training and community attitudes. A final section discusses the downside of alternative provision (homelessness, and well-publicised incidents of violent crime); some more successful examples of providing and comprehensive community psychiatric service; and the future of community care in the UK and Europe. |
