Annotation | The black and minority ethnic population of Britain includes people with a wide variety of lifestyles, languages and religions. These variations have a major effect not only on their health, but also in the ways in which they use health services. Research is required if we are to provide a health service which adequately meets their needs. This paper discusses some conceptual issues and definitions around black and minority ethnic groups, sampling methods for research on this population, and characteristics of the researcher which can influence the research process. The researcher must resist the temptation to assign differences in variation in health and health behaviours purely to ethnicity, without looking at other factors for which ethnicity is simply an intervening variable. An awareness of these issues will lead to healthier research. |
