AnnotationThis article reports on interviews with grandmothers from ethnic communities in Luton, Pakistan and St Lucia, to explore their role in the family. In this research, grandmothering roles identified included: the grandmother as surrogate mother; the grandmother as disciplinarian or educator; and the grandmother as a cultural and family historian. The quantitative and qualitative research methods used are critically assessed. However, analysis can point to aspects of parenting and family life perceived as important in different communities and cultures over significant periods of time, and begin to explore the implications for professionals working with families across differences of race and culture.
