AnnotationFood provides the nutrients that our bodies need to maintain themselves. Proper nutrition takes on added significance during illness, and malnourishment can delay the recovery process. This report investigates the concern that some patients are 'starving' in hospital, and many leave hospital undernourished. It examines factors that contribute to patients not eating and drinking in hospital: problems with ordering and choice of meals; communication between nursing and catering staff on patients' needs; the quality, quantity, appropriateness and choice of food; timing of meals; assumptions made about food left uneaten; positioning of food, cutlery and other physical problems of feeding; medication; the eating environment; and the lack of assistance with food. The report asks who should be responsible for ensuring that patients eat and drink in hospital, and makes recommendations.
