AnnotationThis volume comprises selected papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, held in Osaka, Japan in 1996. In the previous two years, there have been major advances in understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of the disease. These include discovery of the genes whose mutations associate with Alzheimer's in familial cases, the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration, and identification of specific steps in the neurodegenerative process that provide targets for therapeutic intervention. Advances in knowledge of epidemiology and risk factors, differential diagnosis, histopathology, molecular pathology, the generation of animal and cellular models, and psychosocial care (including family caregiving) are covered in some detail.
