AnnotationThis is the first of two volumes, which is the first review to cover all available sources of health data. Expert contributors describe and propose explanations for the substantial changes which have taken place in the British population's health between 1841 and 1994 - though it should be noted that this generally means England and Wales. This volume reviews broad trends in mortality, life expectancy, use of health services and changes in factors which have influenced health since 1841. Topics covered include: sources and methods for monitoring health and disease; use of morbidity statistics by the health service; trends in diet; alcohol and illicit drug-related diseases; smoking-related diseases; housing-related disorders; family and household structure influences on health; the effects of air pollution and climate in the short and long term; and the positive and negative effects of medical advances.
