AnnotationThis article results from a keynote session on the measurement of health status at the 1995 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, sponsored by its Medical Sociology Section. The article describes practical and methodological issues in using generic measures of health status with elderly persons, such as the SF-36 Health Survey. It gives an overview of the Health Survey, and discusses questionnaire design and mode of administration, psychometric considerations in assessing older people's health, and its reliability and validity. The author also discusses functional assessment of the cognitively impaired, and differences between cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.
