Sociodemographic predictors of firearm suicide among older white males | Author(s) | Mark S Kaplan, Margaret E Adamek, Olga Geling |
Journal title | The Gerontologist, vol 36, no 4, August 1996 |
Pages | pp 530-533 |
Keywords | Suicide ; Older men ; White people ; Demography ; United States of America. |
Annotation | Compared to women, younger males and other racial/ethnic groups in the US, white males aged 65 and over have the highest suicide rates. This study examined the sociodemographic factors associated with late life firearm (vs other methods) suicide among white males. White males aged 65-84 residing in non-metropolitan areas who were married, divorced or widowed and with less than a high school education were significantly more likely to have killed themselves with a firearm than any other method. Policy initiatives and community interventions should incorporate this knowledge of those demographic subgroups most at risk from firearm suicide. |
