AnnotationThis article is the fifth in a series of articles reviewing the changing composition of the population of the UK. The size and characteristics of the elderly population have major implications for policy makers and the providers of a wide range of goods and services. Current debates about financing of pensions and provision of long-term care for disabled older people rest heavily on concerns about the implications of demographic change. As so many patterns of consumption vary with age, these demographic changes also have implications for, for example, house builders, transport planners and retailers as well as providers of health and social services. This article focuses principally on changes since 1971, although some longer terms are also considered.
