AnnotationThis study developed a new approach to improving the procedure for giving the cancer diagnosis, and tested a model for involving patients and staff in the development of local services. The project aimed to: find out what both patients and doctors consider to be the important elements of giving the cancer diagnosis, and how this might be improved; develop a set of guidelines based on priorities established by this consultative exercise; use the guidelines to establish an auditable procedure for giving the diagnosis which is acceptable to patients and doctors; and evaluate the effectiveness of this method of patient consultation and participation. Although designed for use with cancer patients, the guidelines are adaptable to any other situation in which bad news has to be broken.
