AnnotationThis report is the first part of a full review of research on age discrimination in health care, and outlines some of the main concerns in the case studies presented. It recommends that established and overt instances of age discrimination at national and local level should be removed; and that the government should set up an independent inquiry to examine the causes and extent of discrimination in the NHS (National Health Service) and to identify possible solutions. Further training is needed for health service staff about the ageing process itself, to explode myths about ageing and treatment; and increased resources will need to be made available where required to allow older patients to be offered the full choice of NHS treatments.
