AnnotationAs with the authors' previous 1987 publication, 'The growing divide', this book chronicles the processes of social exclusion since 1979, the growth in poverty and inequality, a regressive tax regime, and social security changes over the period. The authors examine how social exclusion is compounded by gender and race, and how poor people have fared worst from Conservative policies on education, housing, health and unemployment. They make suggestions for a more effective social security system, arguing that Britain can afford a decent welfare state.
