AnnotationAn often overlooked but growing segment of US society consists of older people, particularly those who live in isolation. It is conceivable that loneliness of isolation, whether self-imposed or otherwise, exacerbates thinking about unresolved intrapsychic issues, and may well contribute as an antecedent for depression, personality dysfunction, and even premature dementia. It is hypothesised that an effective counselling model for 'in need and at risk' older people - incorporating principles of community psychology - can serve as a significant intervention to improve coverage, delivery of service, and consequently quality of life. The article focuses of the importance and critical role of the case manager, social worker, psychologist, or other outreach helper as described within the suggested counselling model.
