Annotation | Natural support systems represent an important community resource for meeting Puerto Rican elders' social service needs - the family being the most important. However, religion is widely considered the second most important support. This article reports the findings of a study of 558 Puerto Rican older people - 214 of whom indicated having a functional disability - and 194 of their primary caregivers in a New England community. The role of religious institutions in meeting elder social service needs is examined, and the implications for social work practice are presented. |
