Annotation | Caregiving for those with early Alzheimer's disease (AD) has received insufficient attention from researchers and programme developers. Caregivers' needs are often complex and intense, and social workers can play a crucial role in assisting this underserved population in adjusting to the demands of early stage caregiving. This article describes a psycho-educational support model for caregiving spouses of early AD patients, which has been used with 10 spousal caregiver and patient groups over the past five years. The major themes which have consistently emerged for caregiving spouses are discussed and case examples are given. Recommendations for those working with early caregiving spouses are discussed. |
