AnnotationThis study compares two analytical approaches to the identification of associated formal services used by a sample of 773 older Mexican Americans. To identify the most efficacious approach, both hierarchical cluster analysis and factor analysis techniques are presented and contrasted for potential use in applied ageing research. Results indicate that among nine services used by this group, there are two clusters of intercorrelated services that represent categories of latent service needs: use of senior centres and luncheon clubs; and use of in-home nursing care and a home-health aide. These services should be considered as service 'packages'. The use of factor analysis provided a better or more complete interpretation of the data than hierarchical cluster analysis.
