Annotation | Residential services for chronically mentally-medically ill (CMMI) elders have historically been provided by institutions or nursing homes, and have not met their needs as demonstrated by de-institutionalisation and regulations limiting residence of CMMI older people in nursing homes. This article reviews two high-intensity mental health programmes designed for CMMI older people. They emphasise normalised living experiences, despite the residents' serious medical and psychiatric conditions. One programme was initially designed for this specialised population, while the second was developed as a sub-programme within a more general community-based residential care programme for chronically mentally ill (CMI) older people. Both serve as models for future programmes seeking to advance the original goals of de-institutionalisation and provide continuing care for those with chronic mental illness as they reach later life. |
