AnnotationThe author reveals the way in which, historically, the subject of retirement has been intertwined with the social definition of the older person and old age. This book is divided into three parts, covering past, present and future. In Part I, cultural perceptions - the images of old age and older people - are shown as crucial to the provision of pensions and other welfare services in later life: ageist attitudes make reforms difficult to achieve. Part II focuses on the present day position, and combines detailed analysis of older people's incomes and the cultural context of retirement. In Part III, the author considers what is likely to happen to older people in the 21st century, given the current cultural and political situation; and offers his ideal solution embodying citizenship and social cohesion.
