AnnotationThe objective of this study was to assess the predictive validity of several common and more recently developed measures of functional status against long-term (18 month) outcomes of survival, institutional living location, and (re)hospitalisation in a mixed population of geriatric patients. No independent predictor was found for hospital admission, so factors other than those measured by the tests used must apply. Otherwise, the study found that self-report and performance-based measures of functional capabilities are useful instruments to identify patients at risk from nursing home placement and death. These measures can also be helpful in planning better treatment and resource allocation, and targeting patients for different services.
