AnnotationThis article briefly reports on the Fracture Intervention Trial (FIT), a prospective, randomised, double-blind study, designed to test the efficacy of oral alendronate versus placebo in reducing fracture risk. The alendronate treatment induced a positive change in bone mass over three years, compared to the placebo; and was also associated with significant reduction in new vertebral deformities and fractures. More data are needed concerning the treatment's efficacy, and in order to avoid gastrointestinal side effects.
