Annotation | The aim of a Geriatric Evaluation and Rehabilitation Unit (GERU) is to improve health and functional status through medical care and rehabilitation, and so reduce health service needs after discharge. To achieve these aims, GERU inpatients need longer in hospital, compared to those admitted to acute care wards. The authors of this Italian study suggest that while their data indicate health-related factors as the main determinants of prolonged stay in hospital, they cannot rule out delayed discharge being due to social problems, possibly caused by poorer health. Their findings show that impairment in gait and balance, dependence in basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL), malnutrition and physical health are relevant in predicting prolonged stay in their Unit. |
