Annotation | This is the first multi-hospital epidemiological study of prevalence and characteristics of urinary incontinence in elderly inpatients in Japan. Its prevalence in the survey group for patients under 70, 70-79, 80-89, and over 90 years old was 59.3%, 67.7%, 79.8%, and 82.2% respectively. Overall, 72% suffered from urinary incontinence. The main causes or factors identified were: cerebrovascular disease; functional urinary incontinence in those who were physically and/or mentally unable to go to the bathroom without aid; dementia; urinary tract infection; and poor activities of daily living (bedridden). Urinary incontinence was not so frequent in patients who could walk. Padding and bladder catheter were the main means of incontinence management, whereas behavioural therapy and surgery were not common. These results suggest that older patients with treatable urinary incontinence do not receive adequate therapy in Japan. |
