Annotation | In this cross sectional study in Gothenburg, Sweden, occupational therapists interviewed and observed older people at ages 70, 73 and 76 to assess their performance in daily life activities. Older people and their relatives were asked about the extent of different services and informal support. Personal and home assistance care by relatives almost doubled between ages 70 and 76, as did the use of the Handicap Transport Service. The study shows that at the age of about 73, older people should be offered formal support, such as the supply of assistive devices. Help from relatives and friends increased much more than from social welfare services between the age of 70 and 76. Relatives and friends assist the old in their homes to a large extent, and frequently: they are doing an important job for their elderly and for society, and should be given every possible kind of public support and relief to have the strength to continue. |
