AnnotationA survey of 10 Veterans Affairs (VA) geropsychology postdoctoral fellowships offered in the US was conducted to assess the extent to which courses examined issues of death and dying. Only 30% of fellowships offered palliative care or hospice training. Two courses required fellows to follow patients in a hospice setting. A third course had fellows consult on medical and surgical in-patients through a palliative care team. These findings indicate that few VA hospitals offer training in palliative or hospice care for geropsychology post-doctoral fellows. However, as the numbers treated in VA hospitals for terminal illness increase, the need for professionals familiar with issues of death and dying will become imperative.
