Annotation | A survey of 10 Veterans Affairs (VA) geropsychology postdoctoral fellowships offered in the US was conducted to assess the extent to which courses examined issues of death and dying. Only 30% of fellowships offered palliative care or hospice training. Two courses required fellows to follow patients in a hospice setting. A third course had fellows consult on medical and surgical in-patients through a palliative care team. These findings indicate that few VA hospitals offer training in palliative or hospice care for geropsychology post-doctoral fellows. However, as the numbers treated in VA hospitals for terminal illness increase, the need for professionals familiar with issues of death and dying will become imperative. |
