AnnotationThe authors describe the effects of a skin cancer prevention programme on a sub-sample of older people in terms of their health beliefs and behaviour, and the power of an expanded Health Belief Model (HBM) in explaining two different protective behaviours - primary prevention and early detection - in this age group. The findings were that basic health beliefs changed within 4 months, and that a health intervention programme for the 60 and over age group is more likely to positively influence the recommended health behaviours when the main educational message focuses on basic health beliefs: the value of health, and the ability to control it.
