AnnotationThe method of evidence-based practice described in this article is designed to train gerontology health and human service providers in using multidisciplinary material to solve practical problems. Based on the concept of evidence-based medicine, techniques are taught that involve: precisely defining a practice problem and the information required to solve it; conducting an efficient search of the literature; selecting the best of the relevant studies; applying rules of evidence to determine their validity; identifying strengths and weaknesses of the studies; and extracting the practice message and applying it to the patient, client, or organisation. A discussion of the barriers to and evaluation of this method of teaching is presented.
