AnnotationThis study investigates the relative influence of four sets of predictor variables on burnout: staff characteristics; workload and caregiving involvement; work environment characteristics; and social support. Staff burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), specifically its Emotional Exhaustion subscale. Work environment characteristics accounted for more than 60% of the explained variance in burnout, the main factor being role conflict. Implications for restructuring the work environment in long-term care settings are described.
