AnnotationThis paper examines the gender dimensions of health care reform in Canada especially as it pertains to the strategy of shifting care to 'the family' and 'the community'. It also examines the convergence between principles of health care reform and nursing's view on the organisation of health care. The main focus is on the impact on caregivers of the shift in care work that is occurring as hospitals reduce bed numbers. The ideology behind this shift and the apparent support of nurses for the reforms are explored.
