AnnotationThis article reports on a questionnaire to assess practice and knowledge relating to care of the elderly among emergency department nurses in Ontario, Canada, and to assess their self-reported educational needs regarding care of the elderly. Results indicated that many nurses lacked knowledge in assessing depression, dementia, falls, malnutrition, myocardial infarction, infection, and urinary incontinence in the elderly. There were significant correlations between deficits in assessment of mental state and malnutrition and self-reported needs for further education in these areas. There was also need for further education in physical assessment of old people.
