Annotation | Based on research conducted in the UK, this paper deals with the effects of dementia on the family. It summarises prevalence of the disease in the population, problems of diagnosis, and the impact of stresses and strain on families and sufferers. Expectations and responsibilities of different types of support networks - families and statutory services - are discussed. Some support networks have greater capacity to provide long-term personal care than others. It is suggested that only specific types of network can cope with long-term care, and that relatives on whom responsibility falls are affected by dementia whether or not they assume a first-hand caring role. |
