AnnotationThis book focuses on change in families and the interaction between family and the state. It examines specific changes in family patterns such as gender and marriage, ageing and intergenerational relationships, policies which impinge on families, and how state-family interaction may be understood. The conclusion is that the state and its policy have ambiguous effects on family life. The author argues for an approach to families which is more "objective" and empirically based, and less ideological.
