AnnotationThese essays, based on papers presented at a conference at the Victoria Hotel in June 1994, draw attention to the paucity of historical and cultural analysis of ageing in Australia and its social and policy implications. Women contributors to a writing workshop reflect on the ageing process; the slow growth of ageing as a field of study is examined; perceptions of how older people have regarded themselves and have been regarded by others are scrutinised; and generational conflict and the question of ageing in 19th and 20th century feminism are discussed. The emergence of disciplinary knowledge about old age, gerontology as a multidisciplinary practice, and the growth of a gerontological literature, and biography covering life from youth to death are discussed.
