AnnotationThis work is part of a major ESRC programme investigating social relationships in old age in three urban areas of England: Bethnal Green, Wolverhampton and Woodford. It reviews approaches to understanding social networks in old age, by examining: issues of population change and older people; the value of understanding relationships in old age as a product of different kinds of 'social networks'; and the nature of changes in kinship and locality over the past fifty years.
